Motivation for Robust Design day

While the principle benefits of robust design are widely accepted, there is still a large gap between robust design in theory and in practice. DTU’s annual Robust Design Day therefore aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners focusing on applied Robust Design and Variation Management in Design and Production. The objective is a regular platform for discussions and a fruitful knowledge exchange on experiences, solutions and challenges faced.

Robust Design Workshop: Managing Variation
This year’s workshop will take the Vaavud anemometer as a case product. Each group will be using the Variation Management Framework (VMF) in order to solve tasks related to product quality issues during the production phase. The VMF has been developed as a way to map variation in process parameters onto design/assembly parameters onto functional performance and finally to perceived quality loss by the customer. The VMF offers and approach to overview the sensitivity of product functions and all of the design and process variable influencing. The framework can aid during engineering design for concept evaluation, re-design, allocation of analysis resources and setting tolerances. During the production phase, the framework can be used to manage variation in order to maintain the functional performance of the product.
